What is Special Chart Patterns?

Special patterns are chart types that do not take the usual month-branch approach: the following patterns (following Wealth, following Killings, following Output and others), the dominant-element patterns (Straight Wood, Blazing Fire, Ripening Earth, Reforming Metal, Flowing Water), and the many rarer patterns recorded in classical texts. What they share is a chart weighted overwhelmingly towards one element.

How it is used in a BaZi reading

When a chart is extremely lopsided — the Day Master isolated and rootless, or overwhelmingly strong with nothing to restrain it — the ordinary support-or-restrain approach fails, and the reading must go with the current instead: follow the dominant god, or commit to the single prevailing energy. The favourable element is then chosen in the opposite direction from an ordinary pattern.

Interpretive limits

The conditions for a special pattern are strict and genuine cases are rare. Mistaking an ordinarily weak chart for a following pattern inverts the favourable and unfavourable elements completely, so the call demands great caution; the material here is theoretical explanation only.
