What you need to provide
- One concrete question, fixed in mind before you cast — "how will this turn out", not "tell me about my life".
- A question category (career, relationship, wealth, health, travel, lawsuit, lost item, other) — it decides which relative is taken as the useful god.
- A casting method: shake three coins six times, cast from the current time, or cast from two numbers.

How it's calculated
- Coin method: three coins are cast six times, building the hexagram from bottom to top; three-of-a-kind lines become moving lines.
- Time and number methods derive the trigrams and the moving line arithmetically from the moment or the numbers you give.
- The cast hexagram is then 'installed' by NaJia rules: each line receives an earthly branch and five-element, from which the Six Relatives, Six Spirits and the useful god are read.
What this tool does not do
One cast answers one matter and reflects the moment it was made. Re-casting the same question does not give a clearer answer — it interferes with the reading. Liu Yao is a traditional interpretive method, not a forecast of fact, and it is not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.
Common questions
What kind of question suits Liu Yao?
A single, concrete matter with an outcome: whether an interview will land, whether a deal will close, where a lost item is. It works badly for open-ended questions like "what is my life like" — that is what a birth chart is for. Ask one thing at a time, and settle the question before casting rather than while casting.
Coin, time or number — which method should I use?
Traditionally the three-coin method is the standard, because the physical act focuses attention on the question. Time casting and number casting are accepted shortcuts that produce a hexagram from the moment or from numbers you name. The method changes how the lines are generated, not how the result is read.
Can I cast again if I don't like the answer?
No — that is the one rule every Liu Yao tradition agrees on. A repeat cast on a settled question is treated as unreliable. If the reading is unclear, the usual remedy is to sharpen the question into something narrower and more concrete, then cast on that instead.
