Void Branches (Kong Wang)空亡

The six void groups: how they are judged and what they affect

6 articlesLast updated

What is Void Branches (Kong Wang)?

Void branches (xun kong) arise from pairing ten stems with twelve branches: after each run of ten combinations, two branches are left with no stem to pair with, and those two are that run's void branches. The sixty-year cycle divides into six runs, giving six groups of void branches.

How it is used in a BaZi reading

The void is looked up from the run the day pillar falls in, and the chart's other branches are then checked against it. Tradition holds that a palace falling void loses force and its affairs turn changeable — a void Wealth star suggesting money that comes and goes, a void spouse palace suggesting a marriage that needs working at.

Interpretive limits

How the void is applied varies widely between schools, and there are several exceptions — "void yet not void" when the branch is clashed, combined or filled. It modifies a judgement; it does not constitute a conclusion on its own.
