Chart Patterns (Ge Ju)格局

The ten standard patterns: what forms them and what breaks them

What is Chart Patterns (Ge Ju)?

A pattern is the structural type assigned to a chart, centred on the god that emerges from the month branch. The common eight — Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Direct Resource, Indirect Resource, Eating God and Hurting Officer — are named after the Ten God revealed by the month branch's hidden stems.

How it is used in a BaZi reading

Establishing the pattern is the backbone of a Ziping reading: see which god the month branch reveals, judge whether it is strong and whether anything has broken it, then decide whether the favourable element should generate it or restrain it. How clean the pattern is shapes the overall reading of a life's register and its likely direction.

Interpretive limits

"Formed" and "broken" describe the structure of a chart, not the success or failure of a life. Schools disagree about which pattern a given chart takes; in practice, overall circulation and whether the favourable element is effective matter more than the label.
