Your First BaZi Reading
Reading a BaZi chart might seem intimidating at first, but with a systematic approach, anyone can understand the basics. This guide walks you through the essential steps.
Step 1: Generate Your Chart
First, you need accurate birth data:
- **Birth year** (solar calendar)
- **Birth month** (solar calendar)
- **Birth day** (solar calendar)
- **Birth hour** (approximate Chinese double-hour is fine)
Use a reliable BaZi calculator (like our free tool) to convert your birth data into Four Pillars.
Step 2: Identify Your Day Master
Look at the top character of your Day Pillar -- this is your Day Master, the single most important element in your chart. It represents your core self.
The 10 Day Masters are:
- Jia (Yang Wood), Yi (Yin Wood)
- Bing (Yang Fire), Ding (Yin Fire)
- Wu (Yang Earth), Ji (Yin Earth)
- Geng (Yang Metal), Xin (Yin Metal)
- Ren (Yang Water), Gui (Yin Water)
Step 3: Count the Five Elements
Tally up how much of each element appears across all four pillars (including Hidden Stems in each Earthly Branch). This gives you your Five Elements distribution:
- **Balanced**: Relatively even distribution -- adaptable and versatile
- **Strong in one element**: Dominant personality trait from that element
- **Weak in one element**: Area that needs support or conscious development
Step 4: Determine Day Master Strength
Is your Day Master strong or weak? This depends on:
- How much support (same element + Resource element) appears in the chart
- The season of birth (each season strengthens one element)
- Support from Hidden Stems
A strong Day Master can handle challenges and take aggressive action.
A weak Day Master benefits from support, cooperation, and conservative approaches.
Step 5: Identify the Ten Gods
The Ten Gods (Shi Shen) describe the relationship between your Day Master and every other element in your chart:
- **Companion (Bi Jian)**: Same element, same polarity -- peers, competition
- **Rob Wealth (Jie Cai)**: Same element, opposite polarity -- rivalry, determination
- **Eating God (Shi Shen)**: Element you produce, same polarity -- creativity, talent
- **Hurting Officer (Shang Guan)**: Element you produce, opposite polarity -- rebellion, expression
- **Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai)**: Element you control, opposite polarity -- stable income
- **Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai)**: Element you control, same polarity -- windfall, risk-taking
- **Direct Officer (Zheng Guan)**: Element controlling you, opposite polarity -- authority, discipline
- **Seven Killings (Qi Sha)**: Element controlling you, same polarity -- pressure, power
- **Direct Resource (Zheng Yin)**: Element producing you, opposite polarity -- knowledge, support
- **Indirect Resource (Pian Yin)**: Element producing you, same polarity -- unconventional learning
Step 6: Read the Luck Pillars
Luck Pillars (Da Yun) show the dominant energy for each 10-year period of your life. Each Luck Pillar introduces new elemental energy that interacts with your natal chart, creating favorable or challenging periods.
