Star Brightness (Miao Wang De Di)
In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the same major star falling in different palaces will show marked differences in strength and expression. This difference is measured in terms of "brightness" or "Miao Wang."
Seven Levels of Brightness
Listed from strongest to weakest:
- Miao - The strongest state; the star can fully express its positive traits.
- Wang - The second strongest state; its strength is abundant and its performance is excellent.
- De Di - An above-average state; it possesses a certain degree of strength.
- Li - An average state; its strength is fair.
- Ping - Slightly below average; its strength is ordinary.
- Bu De Di - A weak state; it is difficult for the positive traits to manifest.
- Luo Xian - The weakest state; the star's negative traits easily come to the forefront.
The Practical Impact of Brightness
Taking the Zi Wei star as an example:
- Zi Wei in the Zi Palace (Miao): Strong leadership, a high structure, and a heavy air of nobility.
- Zi Wei in the Si Palace (Luo Xian): Despite aspiring to nobility, it lacks strength and is prone to vanity and arrogance.
Taking the Sun star as an example:
- The Sun in the Wu Palace (Miao): "The sun shining brightly in mid-sky" (ri li zhong tian); open and aboveboard, with career success.
- The Sun in the Hai Palace (Luo Xian): "The sun setting behind the western hills" (ri luo xi shan); giving much but receiving little in return.
Principles of Assessment
Bright Stars (Miao Wang):
- Auspicious stars that are bright: The auspicious effects are doubled.
- Malefic stars that are bright: Their destructive power is also greater and must not be underestimated.
Fallen Stars (Luo Xian):
- Auspicious stars that are fallen: The auspicious effects are weakened.
- Malefic stars that are fallen: Their destructive power is weakened, but they still require caution.
Practical Application
When assessing the overall structure of a chart, the first step is to look at the brightness of the major star in the Life Palace. A bright major star is one of the fundamental conditions of a good chart. However, brightness is only one contributing factor; a comprehensive assessment also requires considering multiple aspects such as the Four Transformations and auxiliary or malefic stars.
