Major Limits and Annual Pillars

The time-projection system of Zi Wei Dou Shu is divided into major limits (decade cycles) and Annual Pillars (yearly cycles), as well as more granular monthly, daily, and hourly cycles. This temporal framework enables Zi Wei Dou Shu to precisely forecast changes in fortune across different periods.

Major Limits (Decade Cycles)

The major limit (Da Xian) is the most important unit of time in Zi Wei Dou Shu, with each major limit spanning ten years. The starting age for major limits is determined by the Five Elements frame:

• Water Second Frame: begins at age 2
• Wood Third Frame: begins at age 3
• Metal Fourth Frame: begins at age 4
• Earth Fifth Frame: begins at age 5
• Fire Sixth Frame: begins at age 6

Major limits progress sequentially from the Life Palace (Ming Gong): yang-born males and yin-born females move forward, while yin-born males and yang-born females move backward. Upon entering each new major limit palace, the major stars within that palace and its three harmonious and four cardinal positions exert a significant influence on the individual.

Annual Pillars

The Annual Pillar (Liu Nian) refers to the fortune of the current year, with the earthly branch of the year determining the position of the annual Life Palace. Once the annual Life Palace is established, the Twelve Palaces (Shi Er Gong) for the year are arranged in sequence, and the annual Four Transformations (Si Hua) are overlaid to interpret the year's fortune.

The Overlay Method

The essence of Zi Wei Dou Shu lies in its multi-layered palace overlay:

1. Natal Chart (Xian Tian Pan) - The foundational structure for an entire lifetime
2. Major Limit Chart (Da Xian Pan) - The dominant themes of a decade cycle
3. Annual Chart (Liu Nian Pan) - The specific details of a given year

By overlaying these three charts, a single palace may carry information from the natal, major limit, and annual layers simultaneously. Only through comprehensive analysis of all three can precise predictions be achieved.

Practical Keys

• A favorable major limit with an unfavorable Annual Pillar: Overall conditions remain acceptable; any setbacks during a particular year can be resolved
• An unfavorable major limit with a favorable Annual Pillar: Conditions improve temporarily, but the broader trajectory remains difficult to change
• All three charts favorable: The most optimal fortune for that period
• Note the direction of incoming transformations: Special attention is required when a transformation of taboo (Hua Ji) clashes with the natal Life Palace or the major limit Life Palace
