Auxiliary Stars and Malefic Stars

In addition to the fourteen major stars, Zi Wei Dou Shu features numerous auxiliary stars (auspicious stars) and malefic stars. They modify, strengthen, or disrupt the major stars, making them indispensable factors in determining the caliber of a chart's structure.

The Six Auspicious Stars

  1. Zuo Fu - The star of support; represents benefactors, assistance, and aiding power.
  2. You Bi - Similar to Zuo Fu; when paired together, their assisting power is greatly amplified.
  3. Wen Chang - The star of literary talent; favorable for examinations, documents, and academia.
  4. Wen Qu - The star of art; favorable for artistic pursuits and the display of talent.
  5. Tian Kui (Yang Noble) - The daytime benefactor; represents overt assistance from benefactors.
  6. Tian Yue (Yin Noble) - The nighttime benefactor; represents covert support from benefactors.

The Six Malefic Stars

  1. Qing Yang - The star of punishment and injury; impulsive and impatient in nature; governs accidental harm.
  2. Tuo Luo - The star of delay; indicates fluctuation in endeavors and covert obstruction.
  3. Huo Xing - The star of violence; impatient and volatile; governs sudden events.
  4. Ling Xing - Similar to Huo Xing but darker in nature; erupts covertly.
  5. Di Kong - The star of Void; governs loss, emptiness, and the spiritual realm.
  6. Di Jie - The star of plunder; governs financial loss and unexpected changes.

Principles for Evaluating Auxiliary and Malefic Stars

Auspicious Star Principles:

  • Auspicious stars flanking or residing in the Life Palace: Enhances the structure.
  • Zuo Fu and You Bi paired: Assistance is doubled.
  • Wen Chang and Wen Qu entering the Life Palace: Denotes intelligence and wisdom.
  • Tian Kui and Tian Yue flanking the Life Palace: A life filled with benefactors.

Malefic Star Principles:

  • Malefic stars entering the Life Palace are not entirely ominous; the overall structure must be considered.
  • The "Huo Tan" and "Ling Tan" structures: When Huo Xing or Ling Xing share a palace with Tan Lang, it paradoxically signifies sudden fortune.
  • Malefic stars in the three-way frame and four cardinal positions: Affects the stability of that palace.
  • Four malefic stars converging: The structure is severely downgraded, leading to a life of setbacks.

Harnessing Transformations

When experts analyze a destiny, they emphasize "utilizing malefic stars"—meaning that within certain structures, malefic stars can actually stimulate the potential of the major stars. For example, when Seven Killings encounters malefic stars, it gains driving force, and when Tan Lang meets Huo Xing or Ling Xing, it paradoxically brings sudden wealth. The key lies in the balance of the overall structure.
