Date Selection for Moving

Moving into a new home is regarded as an important life event in traditional Chinese culture. There is a folk saying that "one can only thrive in their career after settling into a peaceful home." Choosing an auspicious date to move symbolizes a fortunate and smooth life in the new residence.

Basic Principles of Date Selection for Moving

  1. Do not clash the house's facing direction - The date must not clash the mountain-sitting direction of the house.
  2. Do not clash the head of household's BaZi (Ba Zi) - The date must not clash the Year Pillar (Nian Zhu) of the head of the household.
  3. Avoid the direction of the Three Killings - The Three Killings must not be offended.
  4. Choose a day suitable for moving in - Among the Twelve Day Officers, Success days and Open days are preferred.
  5. Avoid Moon-Breaking days - Moon-Breaking days are unsuitable for any endeavors.

Choosing an Auspicious Moving Date

Days suitable for moving:

  • Days visited by Heavenly Virtue and Lunar Virtue
  • Days visited by the Post Horse (favorable for relocation)
  • Heavenly Pardon days (free from all taboos)
  • Success days and Open days (auspicious days in the Twelve Day Officers method)
  • Six-harmony pair days (symbolizing harmony and union)

Days unsuitable for moving:

  • Year-Breaking and Moon-Breaking days
  • Three Killings days
  • Destruction days (in the Twelve Day Officers method)
  • Four Wasted days
  • Heavenly Fire days (taboo for moving into a residence)

Moving and the House's Facing Direction

When selecting a date, one must consider the house's sitting and facing direction (the mountain-sitting direction and facing orientation):

  • For a house sitting north and facing south, avoid Zi days (which clash the sitting direction).
  • For a house sitting east and facing west, avoid Mao days (which clash the sitting direction).
  • By this logic, the Earthly Branch of the chosen date must not clash the house's sitting direction.

Choosing an Auspicious Hour for Moving

Moving requires not only choosing an auspicious date but also selecting an auspicious hour:

  • Generally, morning time slots are chosen for moving (as Yang energy is on the rise).
  • Avoid moving after sunset (as Yin energy gradually increases).
  • The hour must not clash the head of household's BaZi.

Traditional Customs for Moving

  • On the day of the move, the stove and cooking utensils should be moved in first (representing the continuation of livelihood).
  • When entering the residence, carry valuable items in hand (symbolizing wealth entering the door).
  • It is customary to host a gathering within three days of moving to warm the house.
  • Pregnant women should ideally not participate in the moving process.

Handling Special Circumstances

If a perfect moving date simply cannot be found, one may:

  1. First select a date for "installing incense" (setting up the household altar/shrine), then gradually move in the rest of the belongings.
  2. Choose a day that "does not violate any major taboos" and make compensations through the selected hour.
  3. Move in a small number of items first to establish residency, while the formal relocation can take place at a later time.
