Tao Yuanming, a celebrated pastoral poet and recluse of the Eastern Jin to Southern Dynasties period, styled Yuanliang. His simple and natural poetry and prose, written after he resigned from office and retreated to seclusion, profoundly influenced later generations, with representative works including Returning to Dwell in Gardens and Fields and Peach Blossom Spring. His life was filled with legend, and his BaZi (Ba Zi) chart reveals the code of his life's trajectory.

Verification of Birth Time

Tao Yuanming was born in Pengze (present-day Jiangxi), and according to research, was born during the Wu hour (11:00–13:00). The Wu Earth Day Master is rooted in Chen, inherently possessing a self-reliant nature. Wu is a Friend (Bi Jian), strengthening the Wu Earth's sense of self, endurance, and inclination toward farming and study, which aligns with his personality and lifestyle of resigning from office, retreating to seclusion, and personally cultivating his fields. Within Wu there is Ding Fire as the source of literary talent, complemented by the Indirect Resource (Pian Yin) of the Month Command, which supports study and reflection, explaining the richness of his poetry and prose as well as his gentle yet principled temperament. In contrast, a Direct Officer (Zheng Guan) structure tends toward conformity and obedience in officialdom, which does not match his choice to uphold his integrity and withdraw from public life; a pure Indirect Resource or Hurting Officer (Shang Guan), while indicative of talent, would weaken his capacity for independent self-reliance and his attachment to farming; Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai) or Seven Killings (Qi Sha) would favor fame and profit or breed aggression, incompatible with his indifference to worldly gain and lofty reclusion. His encounter with a Luck Pillar (Da Yun) shift in his forties—a period of Hurting Officer agitation—corresponding to his resignation from office, also aligns with the self-awakening and refusal to compromise associated with the Wu hour.

Core Analysis

The chart consists of Jia Zi, Bing Zi, Wu Chen, and Wu Wu. The Day Master is a Wu Chen Day Master, with Earth as its foundation, seated on Chen which carries damp earth. The Heavenly Stems reveal Jia, Bing, and Wu, presenting a structure supported by Friend strengthening the Day Master and assisted by Resource. The two Zi Water pillars in the Year and Month appear simultaneously, with Water and Earth contending, indicating both external temptations and the inner tension of holding to simplicity, embodying the inner driving force behind his resignation and reclusion.

The Luck Pillar progression reveals key life milestones: the Geng Chen and Xin Si (Hurting Officer) period corresponds to attempts at officialdom and his discomfort with it; his resignation in 405 aligns with the Xin Si Hurting Officer Luck Pillar; in 415, the Ren Wu Indirect Wealth Luck Pillar brought external assistance, while in his later years the Gui Wei and Jia Shen Luck Pillars gradually returned him to tranquility. Overall, the chart leans toward the mutual support of Friend, Rob Wealth (Jie Cai), and Resource, suited to self-cultivation, self-reliance, and indifference to fame and profit, fostering both his pastoral poetic tradition and his steadfast personal integrity.

Trait Analysis

  1. Independence and Self-Reliance: The chart takes the Wu Chen Day Master as its foundation and shows multiple Friend elements, indicating a strong sense of independence and an inclination not to rely on others, hence his early decision to resign and retreat to seclusion.
  2. Integrity and Loyalty: The Heavenly Stems contain Resource nourishing the Day Master; the Resource star nurtures the mind and will, and the chart holder upheld his moral principles and integrity, unmoved by profit and position.
  3. Refined and Lofty Tastes: The Water in the chart interacts with the Hurting Officer and the Luck Pillars, stimulating expression and artistic desire, fostering his pastoral poetic style and literary achievements, though with a tendency toward reclusion and minimal socializing.
  4. Official Career Setbacks: The abundance of Zi Water contending with Earth, combined with the clash between the Hurting Officer and Friend, created career setbacks and an inability to remain long in high positions.
