Du Fu, a great realist poet of the Tang dynasty, is revered as the "Sage of Poetry." He was born in Gongxian, Henan (present-day Gongyi, Henan), in the Ren Zi (Renzi) year, the Yin month, the Xin Wei day, and the Ji Hai hour. Du Fu's life was filled with displacement, hardship, and turbulence, yet these very trials forged his immortal literary legacy.

BaZi Chart

Du Fu's BaZi chart shows that the Day Master Xin Metal was born in the Yin month, with the Wealth element holding the Month Command. The Hurting Officer reveals itself in both the Year and Month Pillars, draining the Day Master excessively, making him undoubtedly a weak Day Master. The Ji Earth Indirect Resource in the Hour Pillar sits close to the Day Master to generate and support it, forming an exalted structure of "Hurting Officer paired with Resource." This endowed him with profound literary depth and a compassionate heart. The Hai Water Hurting Officer combines with the Yin Wood Wealth, fusing his literary talent with a piercing insight into reality—this is the core astrological manifestation of his "poetic history" style.

Core Analysis

Literary Talent

Du Fu's BaZi features the Hurting Officer adorned with Resource, with the Ren Water Hurting Officer appearing twice. This signifies overflowing talent and a nimble mind, enabling him to commit profound emotions and observations to the written word and thus attain the title of "Sage of Poetry."

Concern for Nation and People

The Xin Metal Day Master is drained of its brilliance by prosperous Water, while Seven Killings attacks the Day Master. This granted him an extraordinary sensitivity and compassion for the suffering of the world, which is why his poetry came to be known as "poetic history."

Bumpy Official Career

The chart suffers from mixed Officer and Killings as unfavorable elements, and the weak Day Master cannot bear the burden of Wealth and Officer. Because the Luck Pillars also pass through lands of prosperous Officer and Killings, his path to officialdom was destined to be arduous, marked by repeated demotions and unfulfilled ambitions.

Solitary Later Years

The Hour Pillar has Ji Earth Indirect Resource sitting atop the Hai Water Hurting Officer. Although the Resource in his later Luck Pillars aids the Day Master, the Water domain brings a life of drifting, corresponding to his final days—lonely and destitute, passing away on a boat on the lakes and rivers of the Xiang region.
