The Relationship Between Ti and Yong

The relationship between Ti and Yong (Ti Yong) is the most central divination rule of Plum Blossom Numerology (Mei Hua Yi Shu), and it is the fundamental methodology that distinguishes Plum Blossom Numerology from Liu Yao. Understanding this relationship is the key to mastering Plum Blossom Numerology.

Determining Ti and Yong

A hexagram consists of an upper trigram and a lower trigram. The trigram containing the moving line is the "Yong trigram" (the governing trigram), while the stationary trigram is the "Ti trigram" (the subject trigram).

• The moving line is in the upper trigram (the fourth, fifth, or top line) -> The upper trigram is Yong, and the lower trigram is Ti.
• The moving line is in the lower trigram (the first, second, or third line) -> The lower trigram is Yong, and the upper trigram is Ti.

The Symbolic Meaning of Ti and Yong

The Ti trigram represents:

• The main subject of the matter
• One's own conditions and state

The Yong trigram represents:

• The matter being asked about
• The other party or the external environment
• The direction in which the matter will develop

Determining the Generating and Overcoming Between Ti and Yong

The generating and overcoming relationships between Ti and Yong are analyzed based on the Five Elements (Wu Xing) attributes of the eight trigrams:

• Yong generates Ti - Highly auspicious. External conditions are favorable to you, and matters will proceed smoothly.
• Ti generates Yong - Unfavorable. You will consume your energy or wealth, and your efforts will outweigh your returns.
• Yong overcomes Ti - Inauspicious. The external environment is disadvantageous to you, leading to obstacles or losses.
• Ti overcomes Yong - Auspicious. You hold the dominant position and can control the situation.
• Ti and Yong are in harmony - Auspicious. Both sides are in harmony, and matters will progress steadily.

Ti and Yong in the Interlocking and Changing Hexagrams

Interlocking Hexagram: Take the second, third, and fourth lines of the original hexagram to form the lower trigram, and the third, fourth, and fifth lines to form the upper trigram. Together, they make up the Interlocking Hexagram. The Interlocking Hexagram represents the developmental process and intermediate stages of the matter.

Changing Hexagram: This is the new hexagram formed after the moving line changes. The Changing Hexagram represents the final outcome and destination of the matter.

Comprehensive Judgment Method

A complete Ti and Yong analysis requires examining four layers of relationships:

1. The Ti and Yong relationship in the Primary Hexagram -> The initial state of the matter.
2. The effect of the Interlocking Hexagram on the Ti trigram -> The developmental process.
3. The effect of the Changing Hexagram on the Ti trigram -> The final outcome.
4. Comprehensive judgment: Centered on the Ti trigram, examine the generation and overcoming exerted by the surrounding trigrams upon it.

Example

Inquiring about wealth, the hexagram Feng (Wind) over Li (Fire), yielding the Family hexagram (Jia Ren), is obtained, with the moving line at the first line (the lower trigram moves).

• Ti trigram: Xun (Wind, Wood)
• Yong trigram: Li (Fire, Fire)
• Ti generates Yong (Wood generates Fire) -> The Ti trigram is drained, meaning that seeking wealth will require significant effort.
• Interlocking Hexagram: Li (Fire) over Kan (Water), yielding the Before Completion hexagram (Wei Ji), where Water overcomes the Ti trigram -> The process will encounter obstacles.
