Life Palace and Body Palace
In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the Life Palace (Ming Gong) and the Body Palace (Shen Gong) are the two most important concepts. The Life Palace represents a person's innate endowments and fundamental structure, while the Body Palace represents their subsequent behavioral direction and life focus.
Life Palace
The Life Palace is the starting point and core of the entire chart. The major star (Zhu Xing), auxiliary stars, and harmful stars seated within it jointly determine the native's fundamental personality, life structure, and innate conditions.
Key factors in assessing the Life Palace:
- Life Palace major star: Determines the foundational tone of the personality
- Co-resident auxiliary stars: Modify or enhance the traits of the major star
- Influence of harmful stars: Add life challenges or setbacks
- Incoming Four Transformations (Si Hua): Transform Prosperity entering the Life Palace indicates smooth fortune; Transform Hinder entering indicates numerous obstacles
Body Palace
The Body Palace represents the direction of subsequent effort and the focal point of the later half of life. The Body Palace will only fall into one of six palaces: the Life Palace, Spouse Palace, Wealth Palace, Travel Palace, Career Palace, or Karma Palace.
Meaning of the Body Palace placement:
- Body Palace in the Life Palace: The lifelong focus is on self-development
- Body Palace in the Spouse Palace: The subsequent focus is on marriage and relationships
- Body Palace in the Wealth Palace: The subsequent focus is on wealth accumulation
- Body Palace in the Travel Palace: Suited for seeking development away from home or making a living in another location
- Body Palace in the Career Palace: The subsequent focus is on career achievements
- Body Palace in the Karma Palace: Emphasis is placed on spiritual life and inner fulfillment
The Relationship Between the Life Palace and the Body Palace
A classical dictum states, "The Life Palace is the foundation; the Body Palace is the application" (命为本,身为用). The Life Palace reveals the inherent level of a person's structure, while the Body Palace reveals the direction of their subsequent effort. Only by examining how the two complement each other can one fully understand the trajectory of a person's fate. Generally speaking, if the Life Palace has a strong structure but the Body Palace is poor, the native will achieve early success but lack staying power. Conversely, if the Life Palace is average but the Body Palace is excellent, the native will be a late bloomer.
