Wang Yangming (Shouren, 1472–1529) was a renowned thinker, military strategist, and educator of the Ming dynasty. He was born on October 31, 1472, in Yuyao, Zhejiang. Wang Yangming not only founded the School of Mind in philosophy but also achieved extraordinary military success, and is revered as a master of his generation.

BaZi Chart

Wang Yangming's BaZi (Ba Zi) is: Ren Chen, Geng Xu, Gui Hai, Jia Yin. The Day Master is Gui, and the structure presents a Hurting Officer (Shang Guan) revealed with support from Resource (Yin Shou) to balance it. Water is prosperous, Wood serves as Resource, and Metal generates Water to reinforce Resource, indicating innate brilliance and strong introspective ability. In his Luck Pillars, the Jia Yin Luck Pillar from 1503 to 1512 stimulated the Hurting Officer, aligning with the critical moment of his enlightenment at Longchang in 1508. The Yi Mao Eating God (Shi Shen) Luck Pillar from 1513 to 1522 promoted practice and teaching, while the Bing Chen Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai) Luck Pillar from 1523 onward favored noble titles and military achievements.

Trait Analysis

  1. Intellectual Power: With a Gui Day Master carrying the brilliance of Water and a revealed Hurting Officer, the chart shows a powerful inclination toward reflection and innovation—the core foundation of his philosophical creativity.
  2. Practical Ability: During the Jia Yin and Yi Mao Luck Pillars, the coordination of the Hurting Officer and Eating God enabled his teachings to be swiftly translated into action and tested through military and political practice. Astrologically, this supports his principle of the unity of knowledge and action.
  3. Introspective Power: The balancing influence of Resource in the chart prompted him to maintain self-reflection and cultivation beneath his outward brilliance, providing the astrological foundation for the Yangming School of Mind's emphasis on eliminating selfishness and extending innate knowing.
  4. Interpersonal Relations and Strategy: The clash involving Rob Wealth (Jie Cai) / Friend (Bi Jian) and exceptional structures shows that he was decisive but prone to conflict with the powerful in interpersonal and official circles. In political struggles, he possessed both courage and risk.

Life Timeline

  1. 1477: Words revealed and name changed to Shouren. At five years old he still could not speak. A Daoist priest passed by and remarked, "What a fine child, but it is a pity the words have been revealed." His grandfather Wang Lun, drawing upon the line from the Analects, "One who attains it through wisdom but cannot hold it through benevolence will lose it even after gaining it," renamed him Shouren. After the name change, he immediately began to speak.
  2. 1484: Losing his mother at a young age, the spring of his heart turned cold. At thirteen, his birth mother, née Zheng, passed away. This major loss profoundly shaped his sensitive and resilient inner world and his life's aspirations.
  3. 1488: The Red Phoenix star stirred; on his wedding day, he instead sought the Dao and explored the mystical. At seventeen, following his parents' orders, he traveled far to Nanchang to marry née Zhu, the daughter of Zhu Yanghe. However, on the day of the wedding, he mysteriously disappeared while discussing the art of nourishing life with a Daoist priest. He was not found until the next day, adding a legendary touch to this major life event.
  4. 1489: Seeking the Dao at Guangxin, his heart turned toward the sages. At eighteen, while passing through Guangxin, Wang Yangming visited the Neo-Confucian philosopher Lou Liang. Lou Liang taught him the study of "investigating things to extend knowledge." This journey deeply moved him and, for the first time, germinated his clear life aspiration to "become a sage," marking the key starting point of his intellectual awakening.
  5. 1490: Investigating bamboo for seven days, the seeds of the School of Mind sprouted. To put Zhu Xi's theory of "investigating things to extend knowledge" into practice, Wang Yangming sat in his courtyard facing bamboo and spent seven days and nights "investigating" the bamboo to seek its underlying principle. In the end, not only did he fail to penetrate the heavenly principle, but he fell ill instead. This incident became a major turning point in his academic career, leading him to fundamentally question the dominant Cheng-Zhu School of Neo-Confucianism of his time.
  6. 1492: Reaching adulthood, he rose to fame in one stroke. At twenty, he participated in the Zhejiang provincial examination and placed seventieth among the Juren. While he attained this official rank, his interests quietly shifted toward military affairs and horseback archery, laying the groundwork for his future and magnificent career.
  7. 1493: Failing the metropolitan examination, yet his name shook the capital. At twenty-two, he failed the metropolitan examination. Grand Secretary Li Dongyang jokingly remarked that he was bound to become the top scholar, whereupon Wang Shouren composed the Ode to the Top Scholar on the spot, his brilliance stunning everyone present and shaking the imperial court.
  8. 1499: Succeeding in the imperial examination, his official career began. At twenty-eight, he ranked second in the Ministry of Rites metropolitan examination and placed seventh in the second tier of the palace examination, earning the title of Jinshi. He subsequently served as an observer in the Ministry of Works, officially entering officialdom.
