The "auspicious day" is the most widely known date selection (Ze Ri) concept in Chinese folk culture. In the traditional calendar, the ecliptic represents the sun's orbital path, and an auspicious day is one when benevolent deities hold duty along the sun's path.

Origins of Auspicious Days

Auspicious days primarily derive from two systems:

The Twelve Life Stages (Jian Chu) system: According to the twelve duty gods of Jian Chu, the auspicious days are the six days of Chu, Wei, Ding, Zhi, Cheng, and Kai. The inauspicious days are the six days of Jian, Man, Ping, Po, Shou, and Bi.

The Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions system: The twenty-eight lunar mansions take turns on duty. When a benevolent mansion holds duty, it is an auspicious day; when a malevolent mansion holds duty, it is an inauspicious day.

The Twelve Auspicious and Inauspicious Paths

Traditionally, there is also a system of the "Twelve Auspicious and Inauspicious Paths," which categorizes days using twelve deities: Qinglong (Azure Dragon), Mingtang (Radiant Hall), Tianxing (Heavenly Punishment), Zhuque (Vermilion Bird), Jinkui (Golden Chest), Tiande (Heavenly Virtue), Baihu (White Tiger), Yutang (Jade Hall), Tianlao (Heavenly Prison), Xuanwu (Black Tortoise), Siming (Controller of Life), and Gouchen (Curved Array).

Six Auspicious Paths (Favorable):

1. Qinglong (Azure Dragon) - Highly auspicious; all endeavors may proceed.
2. Mingtang (Radiant Hall) - Auspicious; favorable for construction.
3. Jinkui (Golden Chest) - Auspicious; favorable for acquiring wealth.
4. Tiande (Heavenly Virtue) - Highly auspicious; all endeavors may proceed.
5. Yutang (Jade Hall) - Highly auspicious; favorable for marriage.
6. Siming (Controller of Life) - Auspicious; favorable for praying for blessings.

Six Inauspicious Paths (Unfavorable):

1. Tianxing (Heavenly Punishment) - Unfavorable; indicates injury and punishment.
2. Zhuque (Vermilion Bird) - Unfavorable; indicates disputes and arguments.
3. Baihu (White Tiger) - Unfavorable; indicates bloodshed.
4. Tianlao (Heavenly Prison) - Unfavorable; indicates obstacles and entrapment.
5. Xuanwu (Black Tortoise) - Unfavorable; indicates hidden harm.
6. Gouchen (Curved Array) - Unfavorable; indicates entanglements.

Correctly Understanding Auspicious Days

Common Misconceptions:

• Misconception 1: Everything is suitable on an auspicious day → In reality, the day must still match the specific endeavor.
• Misconception 2: Everything is unfavorable on an inauspicious day → For certain specific tasks, an inauspicious day may actually be appropriate.
• Misconception 3: What is marked on the calendar is always accurate → Different almanacs follow different standards.

Proper Approach:

• First, check the favorable and unfavorable activities for the endeavor at hand.
• Next, synthesize multiple factors, including the Twelve Life Stages, the auspicious and inauspicious paths, and benevolent and malevolent symbolic stars.
• Finally, match the day to the individual's BaZi.
