Core Analysis

Mr. Cai Yuanpei was born in the seventh year of the Tongzhi reign in the Qing dynasty. His BaZi (Ba Zi) is Ding Mao, Gui Chou, Bing Shen, Gui Si. The Day Master is Bing Fire. Like the fire of the sun, it is bright and upright, bearing the symbolism of devotion and enlightenment. The Month and Hour Pillars both reveal the Direct Officer (Zheng Guan) (Gui Water). The Officer star is clear and pure, representing a life guided by principle, an emphasis on order and responsibility, and a heart devoted to family, nation, and the world. The Year Pillar's Ding Fire Rob Wealth (Jie Cai) sits atop Mao Wood Direct Resource, forming a dynamic of the Officer and Resource in harmony. The Resource star signifies knowledge and protection, indicating that despite living in an era of upheaval and chaos, his profound scholarship and inclusive spirit would lead him to become a leader of the academic world and a guiding light.

With the Officer star appearing twice in his chart, his life may seem laden with pressure. However, the branch Si Fire in the Hour Pillar serves as the Day Master's foundation. It contains the Friend and Eating God (Shi Shen), representing an inner steadfast faith and the wisdom to enact transformation (the Eating God controlling Seven Killings). In his early years, his Luck Pillars (Da Yun) passed through the strong Water regions of Ren Zi and Xin Hai, where the Officer and Killings attacked the Day Master. Consequently, he lost his father at an early age, and his path through the imperial examinations was far from smooth. In middle age, his Luck Pillars entered the Metal and Earth regions of Geng Xu, Ji You, and Wu Shen. Here, the Eating God and Hurting Officer (Shang Guan) generated Wealth, allowing his talents to blossom and shine. This provided the astrological catalyst for his intellectual pivot toward Western learning, his travels across Europe, his absorption of new knowledge, and ultimately his assumption of the presidency of Peking University and his launching of the New Culture Movement. The combination of the Officer and Resource in harmony and the Eating God controlling Seven Killings perfectly encapsulates his university governance philosophy of "freedom of thought and inclusive embrace," as well as his lifelong pursuit of saving the nation through education.

  3. Reform and Innovation: Hidden within the Day and Hour branches of Shen and Si is the dynamic of the Eating God controlling Seven Killings. This signifies his wisdom and resolve in pushing through reforms under pressure. His transformation of Peking University and his promotion of the New Culture Movement are both manifestations of this astrological influence.
  4. Principle and Integrity: The twice-revealed Direct Officer denotes a pure and righteous Officer star. He was a man who valued principles and championed the rule of law.
